The League of Women Voters Commemorates 100 Years of Votes for Women and the Passing of our 19th Amendment with Community Partners of Erie County. Together We Ask That All Citizens Vote In All Elections.

The Erie Chapter Is 100 Years Old in August 2020.

August 2019 - August 2020 - "JES Remarkable Women's Series" with Corrine Egan


​August 2019 - Dec 25th 2019 - "Women's Suffrage in Erie County" Exhibit on the Watson Curtze Mansion Tour Featuring a portrait of Erie Suffragette Helen Schurlaff in period dress, Watson Curtze Mansion. Cost is $10 for adults, $7.50 for Seniors, free to ECHS members. 
Erie County Historical Society-Speaker Series to possibly include Historian from Seneca Falls.


August 25, 2019, 2:00-4:00 PM - "Women's EqualiTEA" Guest speaker Debbie Sementelli, Living Historian, will be in costume and speak on clothing and attitudes of the day. Call Erie Woman's Club at 814-397-2485 to register. Cost is $25.00

September 18th, 2019, at 7:00 PM - "Disorderly Women" The history of women in American politics. Presented by Jerra Jenrette, PhD of Edinboro University. No cost or registration. event held at the Erie County Historical Society

September 20th, 2019 - "Equal Means Equal" Definitive documentary film on the status of women in America, by Kamal Lopez. Screened at Erie Movie House, 3424 West Lake Road. Cost is $8. 


September 29, 2019, 1:00-3:30 PM - Women Trailblazers: Non-Stereotype Careers/Professions Luncheon. Hosted by the Women's Club, Cost TBA

September 2019 - Display Cases for Children's Books - Children's books display showcasing the Suffrage Movement and Women Leaders w/ The Heritage Room and Erie County Historical Society.

September 2019 Alice Paul: Feminist-Self - Art Exhibition - featured at the display case. From the artist: "This work is one of 12 altarpieces that I created as part of my MFA thesis, which centered on 12 women whom I felt had significant influence on certian aspects of myself - teacher, artist, feminist, singer, spiritual, etc. Each altar includes a portrait and several items or "offerings" that represented the life of the woman portrayed." - Artist Jessica M. Alesso, MFA and Region 2 Representative with the PA Art Education Association.


October 12th, 2019 at 1:00 PM - "The American Suffrage Movement" AAUW is hosting this historical lecture with speaker Elizabeth Garner Masarik, Professor, Buffalo State University. No cost or registration. 


October 15th, 2019 at 7:00 PM - "Women Soldiers in the Civil War" Presentation of the roles women played in the Civil War. Cost is $10.00 for adults and $7.50 for Seniors, or Free for ECHS members. Event held at the Watson Curtze Mansion 


October 24th, Hosted by the Woman's Club at the Erie Art Museum--"Women Trailblazers"

October 25th, 2019, 6-9 PM "Art, Fashion, and Hair Design Over the Past Century" Women's Night Event at Artlore & Studio Hue, contact Lena Trahoske, Judy Meyn, with asssistance from Pointe Foure and Erie County Historical Society. 


November 21, 2019 6-7 PM - Thanksgiving Prayer Service in Memory of the Suffragettes and leading women of today. Presented by Sister's of Saint Joseph at the Chapel at 2631 West 26th Street, Hosted by Betsy Weist, Social Justice Coordinator


December 6, 2019 -"Puttin' On The Ritz" - Chamber Music -  Serving Hor D'oeuvres,  Chocolate Fountain


February 2020 - Student Art Gallery Night, Women's Club of Erie  ​  



March 5th, 2020 at 7:00 PM - "Meet the Artists" - World Premier Concerto Enjoy a Q and A panel with the concerto artists.  Venue TBD. No cost. Call JES to RSVP at 814-459-8000 


March 7th, 2020 - "World Premier Trumpet and Concerto" by the Erie Philharmonic, composed by Vivian Fung, Performed by Mary Elizabeth Bowden. International Women's Day special performance at the Warner Theater, and possible reception with the artists. Tickets are required. Starts at $23.00. 


March 20th, (2020?) - Screening of the film "Iron Jawed Angels" & Discussion -  A film about Alice Paul Era. Presented by NWPA NOW, for Edinboro University's Women's History Month. Screened at  Edinboro University Pogue Center Cinema. No cost.

Library Bibliography/County Library Book Displays-Maggie, Blasco--possibly month of Read Across America Day (March 2nd) or Month of World Book Day (April 23rd), New women's books are launched on International Women's Day in March, too.  International Literacy Day is in September, so there are options.


​YWCA Titusville "Walk and Talk" The YWCA is planning to organize a walk that would stop on every block on Main St in Titusville and talk about an issue that is important to women, with a quote reading at each stop. No confirmed date.


The Lake Erie Fiber Arts Guild, Quilt/Coverlet to Display, 18" X 18" Fabric Squares to be Sewn Together, Design to Reflect the Theme of this Community Celebration of Women's Suffrage and the Culture of Women/ Finished Quilt for Community Display


Many more ideas are in the works.  This proposed calendar will be updated regularly. Any organization wanting to join this community project is welcome to do so, with our calendar participation cut off date being Friday, May 17th.  Email the League of Women Voters of Erie County at lwverie@gmail.com . All community partners assume responsibility for planning and hosting their event, providing a contact person, event name, date and venue.  The Steering Committee will make the calendar known to the public. 

*As of 1/15/19- Seven Female Artists of Erie County Have Submitted RFP"s for the City Art Project, "Her Voice, Her Vote".

​**As 2/419- An Artist Team has been selected along with a design. Details to be publically announced.

Six local female artists, all moms, educators and voters have been selected to create the 2020 anniversary mural for  100 years of "Votes for Women"

Decision on the site location is underway with the final location to be announced soon.
